Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

  • Have class discussions about deafness and hearing impairments.
  • Encourage students to interact.
  • Treat all students in a positive manner.
  • Divide class into smaller groups for discussions as the student will participate more fully.
  • Have a meeting with the student and the interpreter after the first few days to discuss how things are going and what could be improved to help the student participate in class more fully. Informally touch bases with the student, interpreter, or itinerant teacher regularly to ensure student is accessing all information and able to participate.
  • Discuss concerns about the student’s ability to hear privately, not in front of the whole class.
  • Support the student in advocating for communication access in school functions.

Tips for Creating a Successful Learning Environment

Orientation to Serving a Student with Hearing Loss - This online orientation is WONDERFUL! It was created for instructors serving a student with hearing loss at the college level. The information is very appropriate at any level. Some of the accommodations may be advanced for some students in the K-12 setting. This is a very well-done orientation and you can receive a certificate after you go through the material.
