NOTES

I had to delete some names from our listserv last week since they had bounced so many times. Don't forget to change your email address or contact us if your email address changes! We don't want to lose contact with you. And remember that you can "catch up" with
Tech Notes in the archives.

Be sure to like
Florida Hands and Voices on Facebook!

There are still a few openings for the Language-Reading Connection Workshop, May 14-16, at the Westin Hotel in Lake Mary.
Click here for more information or call 1-800-356-6731. This is the same workshop that has been offered the last few years. If you have already attended, please do not register. We want to give others an opportunity to attend. We will be making an announcement about an online version in the next few months. Stay tuned!

SMART NOTES FROM BRIAN

Howdy folks!

Moose out front should have told you, but if it didn't, here is the latest on SMART Notebook!

SMART Notebook 11 is going to be released pretty soon. It has more new features than I have seen them release under one version in a long time. Here is a list of the things you can expect to see in this update:

Features
  • Activity builder  – Creates activity objects that react to actions with animations or sound
  • Embedded web browser  – Inserts web browsers directly onto a SMART Notebook software page
  • Enhanced contextual toolbar – Responds to actions by giving users the required tool choices when they choose a certain object
  • Crayon  – Creates authentic crayon drawings on a SMART interactive whiteboard
  • Customized creative pen  – Builds a unique creative pen from any image
  • Reset page  – Brings SMART Notebook software page back to its last saved state to instantly start again
  • Gesture recognition  – Supports four-touch interactivity for the SMART Board 800 series interactive whiteboard and the SMART Board 8070i interactive display. Also recognizes new shake gesture to group or ungroup objects.
  • Audio recording  – Records sounds directly into a file
  • Shape image fill – Adjusts the size of an image to fit into a specific shape
  • Updated tables – Supports scaling, moving and interacting within tables more easily
  • New text engine – Provides improved text formatting and consistency
  • Fade ink – Fades any regular ink
  • Full-page frame – Allows borders of the page layout to be displayed

I can tell you that SMART has made it clear that even their trainers out and about have to get recertified at this point under the new program! Just emphasizing how much new content there is! Once I have a full grasp of all that is offered, I will be doing a webinar and probably offering some trainings of that sort. That's it! I hope you are having a great spring!

See you soon!

AG BELL MEET AND GREET

As part of Florida AG Bell’s mission, we recognize that families advocating for the needs of children and adults with hearing loss using listening and spoken language need support in their communities.
In an effort to provide this support, the FL AG Bell chapter is hosting a MEET AND GREET on Thursday, April 26
th from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Schultz Center (rm. # 162) located at 4019 Boulevard Center Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
Families of children with hearing loss, adults with hearing loss and professional organizations throughout the Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia communities are invited to attend this inaugural event.  An ASL Interpreter will be present.
The intent of the event is to foster networking among families, adults and professionals in the Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia communities. Additionally, AG Bell Florida’s current vision for the state will be shared to expose participants to the vast resources available in the state and Jacksonville area.
In addition to the inaugural Meet and Greet night, future workshops and fundraisers are being planned on various topics and with speakers who can support the families and adults dealing with hearing loss in our communities.

  • Moms with Apps - This blog features apps that are good for children. Every Friday, they feature apps that are on special that particular day.

  • Apps for Children with Special Needs - This blog reviews apps for children with special needs.
  • iPads in Education - Explores the use of iPads and eBooks in schools.
  • Bridging Apps - This site used to be SNApps4Kids. It is a volunteer community of parents, therapists, doctors, and teachers who share information on how they are using the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android devices with people who have special needs.
App Highlight

UPAD - Do you get frustrated trying to draw or write on the iPad? UPAD has a space that you can move up and down. You can rest your palm on the space and it doesn't interfere with what you're trying to write or draw. Makes writing on the iPad more like writing on paper.

Happi Spells - I have not seen these apps, but teachers can sign up to test them for free. At this time, they have Happi 123, Happi Spells, and Happi Reads.

Do you have a favorite app? Send me the name. Tell me how why you like it and how you are using it in your classroom or with your students.

WEBSITES

Customizable, free, curriculum-aligned student textbooks for K-12 students. At this point, I don't see much for younger students, but I think they will be adding. There is a lot for high school science and math.

iSmartboard.com - Smartboard games, activities and lessons for Reading, Writing ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Health, Physical Education P.E., Library, Music and Foreign Language. This site was created for K-12 teachers and educators who use a Smartboard interactive whiteboard in their classroom. The Smartboard allows teachers to display notes, accommodate different learning styles and engage learners in fun games, activities and lessons!

Links to lots of games, puzzles, scavenger hunts, etc.

Ideas for Using Digital Cameras in the Early Learning Classroom
A few ways you can use digital cameras and the digital images you and your students take in your classroom to enhance learning.

KiddieRecords.com
This site may be more for teachers than for students. I looked through the pages, remembering the hours I spent listening to Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, and Bozo the Clown -- last year. Just teasing. Though I did go through all of those long-playing records a few years ago when I was cleaning out my dad's house. This site has LOTS of these old stories available for you to listen to online, or even download to listen to again and again. Great site!

The Teaching with Primary Sources Journal
Read the inaugural issue of The Teaching with Primary Sources Journal, which explores teaching about the Civil War with primary sources across disciplines. Formerly known as Teaching with Primary Sources Quarterly, this online journal presents strategies and resources for the K-12 classroom from the Library of Congress.

SchoolExpress.com
This site has been around a long time. They have a lot of free worksheets, but you can also subscribe for access to even more materials.

Florida Forest Service: Training and Education
Education resources that have been developed by the Florida Forestry Service for tree planting programs and other educational programs.
