Using listserves is a method of sharing communication among many participants, on a common topic. When a person signs up for a listserve, they are put on a list with every other member of the group. The person will then receive email from the group. There are two ways to receive information from the list. Any member can post an email message to the list. That message is then sent to every member of the listserve group. If the list is very active and people email and respond back and forth frequently, it can add up to *many* messages showing up in your email mailbox! The second method for receiving messages from a listserve is to receive a digest version. Then, daily (weekly, however the list manager arranges) one message will come to your email mailbox with all the messages sent back and forth through that day.
Participation on listserves is a great way to learn about new things and keep in touch with people who have the same interests. If you decide to join multiple listserves, you may find it beneficial to have a personal email account (address) specifically for these lists. There is nothing more overwhelming than sitting at the computer after being away two days and receiving 50 messages - 45 from different listserves you are on!! Believe me!
To join a listserve you must subscribe. You can then select to receive email as individual email messages from everyone who posts, or as a digest. More information about using listserves, the kinds out there, and more is below!
