Real-time Captioning - Remote

Remote Services are becoming more readily available and necessary with the incredible shortage of captionists! A few businesses and agencies have begun offering captioning using Internet based applications.

Viable Technologies is one company providing Remote Captioning Services.

Viable Realtime Translation (VRT) is remote real-time translation for the educational setting. Students with a laptop at their desk have access to captions on screen provided by an off site translator who is listening to the speaker through a phone connection and sending captions through an Internet connection. The edited transcripts are available to the student within 24 hours.

As more people have access to faster Internet access through cable or DSL connections, remote services are becoming available. In addition to remote captioning, remote interpreting and relay using Webcamera is now possible and many companies are providing this service.
