This site was made by second graders. The children mapped a trail
behind their school, researched the animals they saw on the trail, and then
wrote about each animal. They created a digital illustration to accompany their
writing and put it together to create a Web site.

Bugscope

Bugscope is a new educational outreach project of the World Wide
Laboratory. The primary goal of the Bugscope project is to demonstrate that
relatively low cost, sustainable access to a scanning electron microscope can
be made available to K-12 classrooms. Participating classrooms will have the
opportunity to control a Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope to
image insects at high magnification. Students and teachers control the microscope
using web browsers from their classroom computers. The microscope is located
at the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This site monitors monarch butterflies. Students can report their
sightings and communicate with classes around the world.

The Butterflies of North America web site consists primarily of the following information: Distribution maps showing the counties in which occurrence of a particular species has been verified; Photos of the adult and caterpillar (when available); Species accounts containing information on size, identifying characteristics, life history, flight, caterpillar hosts, adult food, habitat, species range, conservation status, and management needs; and Species checklists for each county in the U. S. and state in northern Mexico. In addition to the above information, users looking to identify an unknown butterfly can browse the collection of thumbnail photos and jump to a particular species account and distribution map.

Elephant Sanctuary

This sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee is a refuge for endangered Asian elephants. Videoconferencing is the only way to actually visit these elephants. There are also teaching units that you can download to use in your classrooms.

The Exploratorium is the museum of science, art, and human perception. At this site, visitors can hear the squawk of a duck call be transformed into human vowel sounds, discover the origins of a Bronx Cheer, learn about mutant fireflies, or witness the visual phenomenon of a superimposed swirling shimmer. The Exploratorium web site offers digital versions of popular hands-on exhibits. Some of the current online exhibits are: Solar Max, The Learning Studio (Science Snacks), Paper (origami), Life Along the Faultline, Sport Science, and the Observatory. You can also access former exhibits.
Frogs - A Thousand
Friends of Frogs -
A Thousand Friends of Frogs connects K-12 students, educators, families, and scientists from Minnesota and beyond to study and celebrate frogs and their habitats. The site is based at hamline University's Center for Global Environmental Education. They have created an educator's guide that contains learning activities which deal with recent studies by Minnesota students which found hundreds of frogs in a local wetland with various gross deformities.

These endangered wildcats now have their own web site which maintained by the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The site answers many common
questions about the elusive predators. Learn about their average size, closest
relatives, favorite foods, and preferred habitats. There are also games children
will enjoy and learn from.

San Diego Zoo &
Wild Animal Park -
I visited the San Diego Zoo when I was in San Diego for Hyerfest this past summer. It was great! This is an excellent zoo site. It lets children tour exhibits, read the zoo news reports, and send digital postcards. Current features include photos and video of the park's newest exhibit, Heart of Africa.
Seabird
and Forage Fish Research -
The Alaska Biological Science Center in Anchorage conducts a wide variety of research on seabirds (Puffins, Murrelets, Gulls, etc.), fish, marine mammals, and marine ecosystems, with emphasis on factors influencing marine animal populations, such as oil pollution, fisheries, and natural changes in the marine environment. This educational site is geared toward middle school and up. There is a slide show you can see on the web or download as a pdf file.

This is the web site for the magazine, Zoobooks. There is a database of the animals covered in their magazine and there is also a Virtual Zoo.
